Home Ec 2013 – In Person and At Home (Everywhere!)

Greetings all!

Regular readers of Wellpreserved will recognize the term ‘HomeEc.’  It’s a monthly food event that brings strangers from across Toronto to gather in a local watering hole where they share or swap food, stories and friendship.  The theme of the event is simple: Make Something. Share It.

If you’re not from Toronto and this sounds interesting, don’t stop reading.

We had 12 events last year.  They included:

We’ve had several requests from others on participating remotely or starting a similar series of events in other places or looking for some way to participate from outside our city.  We’re pleased to announce that Home Ec is going to have 2 components this year: an in-person event (just like we always have) as well as a virtual component for those who can’t make it.

How’s it going to work?  At a high-level there are two options:

  1. You can attend the event in person
  2. You can participate in the same challenge/ theme everyone else is doing from the comfort of your own home.

In both cases you can share recipes, blog posts, instagram pics and more under the hashtag #WPHomeEc and we’ll do a monthly wrap-up to all posts/ photos/ etc.

General Instructions

  1. Home Ec is generally the last Monday of the month.
  2. We’ll confirm the theme 2 weeks before the event (or sooner).  We’ll confirm it in a post here and will also post it on Facebook including an event page where people can RSVP to (if they’d like).  Each month will have a different theme.
  3. The first event is Monday, January 28th (8:00PM).
  4. The hashtag (for those who use social media) for the event (virtual or in-person) will be #WPHomeEc.

For those who want to come out in person.

  1. Most of the events are planned to be at The Avro (though that can change as it did a few times last year).
  2. We’ll have a custom badge and button for participants who make it in-person.
  3. You can also use the hashtag (#WPHomeEC) at, before or after the event to share your teasers, recipes or entries for the event (of course this is optional).
  4. If you are a blogger and want to be part of the round-up, send me an email (joel (a) elevenideas.ca) before the end of the calendar month and I will include a link to your post in our round-up the first Monday of the Month.

For those who can’t attend in person.

  1. You don’t need to host an event (but you absolutely can!).  Your challenge will be to make something that matches the theme of the event and share it with someone.
  2. You are welcome to rsvp to the event like everyone else (there are often discussions of the these on the event page).
  3. You are welcome to post pictures of your creations on our facebook page (new photos only please) and can include links to your blogs (if you have them but it’s not necessary) any time between the announcement of the event and the end of the calendar month.
  4. If you are a blogger and want to be part of the round-up, send me an email (joel (a) elevenideas.ca) before the end of the calendar month and I will include a link to your post in our round-up the first Monday of the Month.
  5. If you’re an Instagrammer or Tweeter, use the hashtag to find others sharing their creations.
  6. You don’t need to commit to monthly participation; this is all about having fun and sharing.
  7. If you’re interested in setting up a more formal event to parallel with ours and need some pointers, drop me an email (joel (a) elevenideas.ca) and we’ll do our best to help other HomeEc’ers!

We’ll be announcing the first theme tomorrow!  Who’s coming along?

Comments

  1. A friend of mine posted this to my timeline and I’m so glad she did! Can’t wait to find out what the theme is :)

  2. Hi! We’re putting together an event for Columbus, Ohio. Have there been other official Home Ec events planned outside of Toronto yet?
