Ingredient Index

Welcome to the pilot of our recipe Index.

We hope you’ll take a look at this limited-time preview before we open to the mass-public.  We’ve sent this only via Twitter and Facebook and are asking for feedback over the next week before launching to the public.  It would help us a great deal if you would share any candid feedback on your experience. As our mission is to “Make Something and Share It”, you are welcome to share the password and address for this page (it will be public around the 20th).

Each item in this list represents a main ingredient of a dish, preserve or cocktail – clicking on it will take you to all of our articles in all 3 categories that feature that ingredient.  If you find “Kimchi” here, it’s an ingredient (you can use the existing FIND STUFF menu to find preserving recipes to make it).

We hope you’ll find it useful!

When I select say ‘blueberries’, there’s a fair number of recipes returned, and this will increase over time. When all the recipes are displayed a summary of the recipe names at the top of the page would be helpful. Especially if each is a link down the page directly to a chosen recipe. Unless I was missed something, I found myself doing a lot of scrolling.

Hey Al,

Great feedback – thank you!

We’ve put up a sample of something closer to what you are looking for tonight – click on APPLE and you’ll see a possible new format that shows just a paragraph or two and a picture (if there’s one). Let us know what you think – we’ve also put it out to the facebook community who are chiming in with their thoughts too – would love to know if you’d like this format better.

We’re trying to avoid maually creating a list – this prosposed view is a kind of halfway between a list and the full post. All of our content would switch to this format if it’s what people prefer, so do let us know!

The first few ones I tried turned up great results, though I agree with the message above about an index at the top of the page so one doesn’t have to scroll through them all. However, when I tried hitting pasta only one recipe came up, but I know there are many more that would fit in that category…are there not? Anyway, love the resource and I now have some work to do as I just found a patch of chives in my garden I didn’t know I had (yay…I have some preserving to do, as I have another large patch in another garden that will be my fresh batch, so these can be dried and stored.)

Hi Sara,

Thanks for the feedback and the kind words!

I’ve erased the pasta category for now – I’m kind of in flux on that. This is more about the ingredients than the end dish (though I may make that one too) – and pasta is really the end product. There’s lots of pasta under flour or by using the existing FIND STUFF menu, looking up cooking and seeing the pasta recipes.

As far as Al’s comment, I thought it was a good idea as well. you’ll see in my response to him that we’ve changed the APPLE section to a smaller preview and are asking for people’s feedback. We’re trying to avoid manual work so this is a solution that would provide much less scrolling and still save physical work (though we’d update all the past posts as well).

If we go for this option, all posts will be in this kind of preview mode.

Please let us know what you think – we’re hungry for feedback from everyone!

Ah, right. That makes sense, I had thought I would see recipes to make pasta from scratch – so of course, since it is an ingredients list I should have looked under flour. Thanks.

These are the dorky things we’ve been batting around for about 18 months… :P I can’t say how many things we threw out… and still will. :) J

Moohahaaa!

That’s fun Patsy – glad it led to a new discovery. That is as clost to space food as we’ve got. :) People either love it or hate it! :)
