We’ve been having more and more salad these days so having a steady supply of nuts has been important to our pantry.
The cheapest way to buy walnuts is generally in the shell (although you have to account for the weight of the shell as part of the price) but I generally buy them shelled. I’m not certain why I don’t make the time to shell nuts but it’s generally something that I avoid.
For the last few years, I’ve bought whole walnuts and just grimaced at the price. I would then take them home and, most of the time, chop them up to be used in salad and other cooking. It never occurred to me to check the price of the smaller pieces so I’m probably the last person in the world to realize that pieces of walnuts can be as much as 50% less than whole walnuts when bought in bulk.
