We have a 10-inch cast iron frying pan and we were short 1 pie plate:

The frying pan made a great pie plate!  Cast iron retains it’s heat, the pan was well seasoned and prevented sitcking and it is really pretty.

Although this was out of desperation, this pan is probably my new favorite pie plate!


  1. The heaviness of the cast iron is wonderful in the oven, but there is a downside. You cannot store the pie in that pan for the next day, or the crust will start to taste like a metal pan. Just like cornbread, you have to remove it in the first couple of hours. Also, you have to be very careful not to cut into the cast iron with a knife, or you will leave scratch marks on the bottom or sides of your wonderfully seasoned pan.

  2. Great idea! My grandmother used to bake pineapple upside down cake in one, and I make a honey apple cake sometimes in one, but I hadn’t thought of pie.
