Field Trip!

  • Sharebar

Well, it’s not really a field. It’s the SCIENCE BARGE! A sustainable farm and science museum, floating on the Hudson River in New York. It’s powered by solar energy and wind energy as well as biofuels. The farm is hydroponic and uses rainwater and purified river water. According to their website, the vegetables grown on the barge requre 7 times less land and  4 times less water than field crops. It’s really interesting to see what people are coming up with in the way of growing food in urban centres. A lot of the worlds population (including us!) live in cities, imagine what we could do if we started to rethink the spaces around us. I’m starting to think of ways that we can grow some of our own produce next summer…and geez Toronto…we have a lake, anyone want to get us our very OWN Science Barge?! That would be pretty darn cool.

This video is really inspiring…especially the part that says there’s enough roof top space in New York to provide the whole city with produce.
